Tucked away in Abbotsford, this busy family of 6 keeps their home a retreat, and it was important to them to keep with the character of the home. Although the space is modernized through design, it still holds true to the rustic feel. With the existing log home layout, smart storage and functionality was key in the design.

The heart of the home – the kitchen was cramped and lacking in prep space. There was a small island and there was little space for dining which is also typically where activities such as arts and crafts and homework took place.
An unused storage room and bathroom was reworked to create a larger kitchen featuring:

• Existing wood stove adding a warmth to the space and keeping with the rustic feel
• Custom rustic white oak cabinetry
• Custom concrete countertops
• Woodtone vertical microgroove tongue and groove throughout the home
• New paint throughout the home in Benjamin Moore white

To open the space up, it required the removal of a load bearing wall resulting in a large 34’ steel beam wrapped in wood to match the existing finishes – hand digging was required to a 6’ depth for new point loads.
Design and careful planning were key with this renovation. We were limited by the existing log home layout and could not add any square footage, so working within the same square feet to achieve greater functionality and a feeling of more space.
Our team worked closely – both Designer Tanya Soon and Renovation Manager Simon Poulton – spent many hours going over floor plans to allow for better flow in the kitchen, and repurposing some underused space to be a beautiful master bedroom and ensuite.
The design feels comfortable and welcoming while still luxurious and aspirational – all against the backdrop of a rustic timber framed home. Making all those elements sing was truly a team effort.
The whole home was complimented with:

• Natural stone looking large format tiles throughout
• Custom doors
• Attic space turned into a kids hangout, with access is by a ladder from the main floor
• Large dining room with harvest dining table
• The laundry room was originally oversized and was not the best use of the space and now downsized, is much more functional with custom cabinetry including practical storage and concrete countertops – leaving ample room for sorting and folding.
• A new ensuite features beautiful walk – in shower, large vanity with plenty of storage and counterspace, custom oversized round mirror and vintage inspired faucet
• Master bedroom features a stunning vaulted ceiling with a sweet vintage clawfoot tub creating a sweet relaxing moment in the corner of the room
• Reclaimed hardwood floors – handcrafted in Canada from Northern Wide Plank
• Wood stove for backup with new heat pump
